The Resonant Cavern is a 3D environment inspired by the mystical Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira. Originally intending to model a simpler structure from the same site, I was immediately captivated by the well's design. Its inverted tower-like form, with spiraling stairs leading underground, became the core inspiration for the project. This unique architectural concept drove me to create a more complex and atmospheric scene that captures the eerie, enigmatic beauty of the original structure.
The model was created in Blender with a focus on realism. To optimize the stone walls of the well, I utilized Unreal Engine’s Nanite rendering system, applying displacement maps for detailed stone protrusions. The entire modeling process took about 4 days, but working in Unreal Engine was a learning curve, as I had minimal prior experience with it. With the help of tutorials, I spent roughly a week refining the environment and graphic presentation to match my vision.
For the materials, I combined self-made textures with free online resources. The stone walls feature a custom displacement map and a glow effect, achieved by adding an emission map to the gaps between the stones, making them glow at night. The columns in the scene are neo-Gothic in style, and I created their textures using Substance Painter, giving them a detailed, aged appearance that enhances the atmosphere of the cavern.
